The First Step
The first step is always having a motivation and a purpose to do something. That is not so easy. Sometimes one needs to go out and look for it, other times it comes knocking. If you are so lucky as it comes knocking, good for you. If you need to go out and find it, it’s a bit harder, but not impossible.
What’s harder, I believe is persistence. People lose interest as they go along. A few days of repeated actions that will get you to the end goal – whatever it may be – and then one day, the steam runs out.
I find that sometimes, the steam runs out because there is not a right intention of doing something: the “why?” If you have a why to do something, it is inconceivable that your how and what will fail. You will achieve that which you want to achieve.
As Long As…
As long as you know where you want to be and how to get there. Imagine that you want to start a hotel. But you know nothing about starting a hotel. Well, you have an end goal in mind (starting the hotel), and that is a good enough place to start. The next step, always, should be to figure out what you do know about starting a hotel.
It is more valuable to try and fail than to not try at all, and this is something that people do not naturally understand. It is more valuable to try and fail than to not try at all, and this is something that people do not… Click To Tweet
So, say you decided that, after all, you are going to start a hotel. What do you need to do next? You’ll need land, most likely some (or many) licenses, help, construction crew, restaurant crew… etc.,.
Now, it is even harder to imagine that you can do everything on your own, and naive to believe that you know everything. So the next step is to figure out what you don’t know.
Once you’ve done this, you can either learn how to do it, or you can outsource it by the way of hire or partnership.
Breaking down the end goal into mini-milestones that are achievable and celebrate-able are, perhaps, the biggest barriers to keeping the engine running, keep the steam on, and the fire ignited. If there is a small enough goal everyday that takes you to the larger goal, it is impossible that you will be able to do what you want (as long as it is within the limits of human imagination).
Motivation and Failure…
I often find that people either underestimate what they know, or overestimate it. By failing, and only by failing, can you really gauge how much and how well you know something. But, all things considered, it is possible for one man to do something that another man has achieved. But, all things considered, it is possible for one man to do something that another man has achieved.
